Nurturing competitiveness through Clustering

Nowadays, regions and regional companies face the challenges provided by the global market. The competitiveness of a region is not determined by single companies, but more and more by the innovative activities of entire industries and branches. For this reason, regional competitiveness has become the central topic for the economic and technology policy of the European Union and its member states. The main objectives of these policies are:

  • Fostering innovation – Today, the enhancement of economic globalisation and the increasing use of information technologies put massive pressure on the acceleration of innovation processes.

  • Fostering cooperation – Cooperation means fostering collaboration between industry, with a special focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s), research institutions and academia. Supporting cooperation projects increase the rate of innovation processes and the technology transfer from R&D-institutions and academia to industry.

  • Fostering internationalisation – Especially SMEs do not possess enough resources and know-how to enter new markets. Therefore, internationalisation has become an essential factor for companies and regions to succeed in the global competition.
